To the government of Chile,
We the undersigned would like to express our deep concern and opposition to the Celulosa Nueva Aldea pulp mill, which is currently under construction in Valle Rio Itata. We believe that the mill could cause immense harm to the environment both within the valley and to the coastline where the river empties into the sea. Pulp mills are typically responsible for highly toxic pollution, both to the air and to the water. The current industries of farming and cattle-ranching in the valley will be negatively impacted, as will the fishing in the ocean near the rivermouth. Furthermore, swimming, surfing, and other water sports in the adjacent ocean environment will become dangerous because of elevated pollutants. Overall, the negative impacts to the health of the local population and existing industries far outweigh the economic benefits that Celulosa Nueva Aldea will bring to the region.
We urge you to deny the permits that have allowed Celco to construct this pulp mill, which is in violation of the original environmental impact report, and to halt construction of the mill immediately. We also urge you in the future to require all pulp mills in Chile to adhere to a strict zero emissions standard, to ensure the health of the environment.
Signed,
Save The Waves Coalition
