Rancho Santana, Nicaragua The high-quality, river mouth beach break at Playa Santana (aka Punta Santa Ana) could be permanently altered due to a plan by local real estate developers to alter the natural course of a river.

La Enramada, Canary Islands, Spain Officials in the Ministry of the Environment on the island of Tenerife have informed Save the Waves that the break at La Enramada is safe from harm, and that the proposed projects will not move forward.

Mundaka Spain The left at Mundaka Bay appears to have returned after a three year hiatus, to the joy of local surfers, businesses and contest organizers. The loss of the wave hit the small Spanish town hard, and serves as a reminder of how much a wave is worth.

Jardim do Mar, Madeira
Jardim do Mar, Madeira

The seawall in Jardim do Mar was completed in 2005, following numerous protests sponsored by Save the Waves that argued for the redesign of the project. The wave has been badly damaged, and locals in the village feel betrayed by their government.

Lugar de Baixo, Madeira
Lugar de Baixo, Madeira

Save the Waves and the surfers of Madeira scored their first victory in 2001 when they successfully lobbied the government of Madeira to move a marina away from the right point known as Lugar de Baixo. The government reneged on their promise to preserve the surf spot, however, when they built a new seawall along the shoreline.
