Re: Opposition to the Destruction of Yankee Beach, Nicaragua
Dear Nicaraguan Government Officials, Western Union and the United Kingdom:
This letter is to inform you that your corporate representative and ambassador to the United Kingdom, Piero Paolo Coen Ubilla, has been acting with callous disregard for international environmental guidelines, Nicaraguan laws, and civil procedure.
Mr. Ubilla has purchased land that fronts Yankee Beach in Nicaragua, and although beaches in Nicaragua are public property, Ubilla has placed an armed guard at one end of his property and currently is constructing a pier on the other end of the beach. Ubilla's actions will ostensibly destroy the surfing break, a natural asset which brings tourism to Nicaragua, and will have harmful consequences to sea life and natural marine habitats. The construction plan also includes the use of explosives in fragile marine areas, where parts of the natural reef will be devastated. The pier is not a "public pier" as Mr. Ubilla claims, considering he has already placed locked and armed gates to prevent public access to Yankee Beach. We respectfully request that you require Mr. Ubilla to obey Nicaraguan law, to remove all obstacles that prevent access to this public beach, and to deny his application to build a pier. The approval of such a project could result in substantial economic loss to Nicaragua due to negative impacts on tourism, environmental degradation, as well as the loss of jobs for local citizens who depend on surf and beach tourism in the area. We also request that you encourage MARENA (Nicaragua's environmental agency) to not only deny Mr. Ubilla’s project, but to repair the environmental damage that has already been done. Thank you for your consideration.
Very Truly Yours,
