Re: Opposition to Development Proposal of “ New World Ecological Marina” in Puerto Viejo, Limón.

Dear Costa Rica Government Officials:

As one of numerous concerned ocean enthusiasts, I strongly oppose the development proposal called “Marina Ecológica Nuevo Mundo” Puerto Viejo, Limón. I request that you also show concern for your national economy due to the devastating impact that this Marina will have on the marine ecotourism that comes to your area, due especially to the damage it will inflict on Puerto Viejo’s waves and ocean flora.

The proposed Marina will alter the natural coastline and rich biodiversity of the area. Additionally, the Marina could also alter the world famous surfing wave, Salsa Brava. Salsa Brava is a substantial draw for eco-tourism in the region, bringing thousands of international and national surf tourists each year. The development will also bury a beginner surf spot where the local children learn how to surf, as well as a black sand beach, the minerals of which add to the replenishment of the already damaged coral reef. Costa Rica is already highly developed, hence we believe this project is not only unnecessary, but will actually harm the appeal of the town, which brings tourism there in the first place.

The “Marina Ecológica Nuevo Mundo” proposes to build a six-meter high break water out from the marina’s jetty that could partially block the swell window of the world famous wave “Salsa Brava.” The marina will also engulf the rest of the surf breaks down the coast, which are learning spots for beginning surfers and economical grounds for surf schools in the area. Furthermore, the Marina would recklessly take 5 hectares away from the sea, replacing it with 398 yachts that will add to the water pollution. This project will not be good for Costa Rica at a national economic level, and not good for Costa Rica’s international reputation as a world-class surfing destination as well as an eco-friendly tourist destination.

I encourage and strongly request that your agency become involved to oppose this development proposal, due to the detrimental impact that it will have on Costa Rica’s economy, tourism, environment, international reputation and culture. Your support is necessary for the future prosperity of Puerto Viejo, and to preserve one of the few remaining undeveloped coastlines in Costa Rica.

Best Regards,
